Before talking about what is art therapy, let me first ask you a question-Do you ever feel like time passes quickly when you do a form of art?

When you zone out of your stress, anxiety, and worries because you are too focused on creating something from scratch?

What is art therapy?

When creativity takes over your physical state, emotional state, and mental state, it’s art therapy to me. It’s not the standard definition but I love this form of explanation more 🙂

Art therapy to me is that form of exercise that releases the oxytocin hormone. This wonder hormone has so many benefits I can’t even begin to elaborate. Right from helping with stress, anxiety, depression to a healthy relationship, bonding of new mom and baby it aids it all and a lot more.

How does art therapy work?

Art therapy helps you to communicate with your own self and with your emotions. It helps you understand your emotions better. 

It’s simply about when we do something that we love we often forget our worries and stress. There are a lot of activities that work as stress busters for people of all ages.

Art therapy is a kind of self-expression through your art creation. It helps you heal and understand your personality and flow of thoughts in a mindful way.

And trust me you don’t have to be an expert in any form of art, neither do you need any degree. When I took up the paintbrush, I did it after good 15–20 years. I had done painting only till the first few years of my school and occasional biology diagrams which were not that good 😀

Types of art therapy!

Well, you could try a number of things. Let me list down a few that are conventionally accepted and few which I feel should be part of the list.

Honestly, art can be of any form as long as it helps you reduce your anxiety and stress it serves the purpose!

How art therapy has helped me 🙂

I still can paint for hours and be lost to the tunes of the brush strokes, color patterns, and my subtle mistakes that I try to cover up on the canvas. But I don’t mind making them because they are mine and they teach me something every single time!

The same way writing things down, blogging, making videos, DIY’s, or decluttering my home all of it keeps me sane. It helps me to zone out into the world that is solely mine.

You have to try things that soothe your mind and soul. Something that keeps you happy and keeps you in touch with your deeper self.

Art is like meditation, give it a try and you shall find your zen moment too 🙂
